I haven’t lived in a small town for 60yrs. We had a local grocery store but I think it may have belonged to a small group of stores. We had gas stations that may have the same name based on the gas they sell. Like Sinclair. That was about it. He other businesses were individuals. The biggest corporate raider of town businesses is Walmart. They moved on the outskirts of a town named Cuba in Missouri. They went after the local bakery, sold Identical pastries and bakery good at a price below costs because they can make up the loss with other products, and drive that company out of business and then raise prices. Same with other businesses.
In essence it has been this way as long as I can remember. JFKw as no angel but I believe has was assassinated for intent to de-escalate the Vietnam War. It’s on of the first things I remember. I have seen this as well. I call it continual Cranberry. There is a town here called Cranberry that is considered a suburb. 40 years ago it was farmland. Now it is built up so much that the roads that used to be literal cow paths cannot keep up with the traffic. From the air on approach to PIT it looks so insignificant like a speck that could be flicked off. More mc mansions, more condos, a continuous path of chain stores and businesses. The poor areas have the poor people chains like rent a center, dollar tree, and places that will advance your paycheck. Just an observation……..We went to visit our nephew off the Culpepper exit on I95 in Virginia. After exiting onto the new state road that went straight for 10 miles, I noticed that the exact same chains like in our Cranberry were repeated every so many miles begging the term “continual Cranberry.” I hate it.
We do make fun of the Hallmark channel with its syrupy Christmas movies but honestly I would give anything to live in a Hallmark town.
We have one here in Beaver PA. There is Kretchmar’s bakery, Beaver Superette, hardware store with a wood floor and a wall with hundreds of tiny drawers with screws and bolts, lots of boutique stores, restaurants, a few banks, churches of every denomination and post office all on Main Street USA. It’s flat, Victorian, on the Ohio River and you can walk to everything. There’s lots of towns like that all over. To me, those are the treasures of our country! The people that live there are proud and patronize the businesses.
I would hate to see that all go away for “continual Cranberry.” I’m glad I’m older…..64.

This is the way it is now and there will be no going back and no worldly savior to step in.
