I love the story and isn't it weird that I would never would have read it without my phone. That's the irony, isn't it? We are all connected right here because of technology. I'm communicating with people I've never met but feel close to in a weird kind of way. Your essay was moving. I loved reading it. Thank you for spending the time to write it, and then rewrite it, and then rewrite it until it shined.

Excellent reveal of a sad and serious condition. And one I could understand. My husband died a little over four years ago. He was my favorite being on the planet. We loved our cats, but they couldn’t take his place. My church family is what has saved my sanity. It’s a group of people I see in person at least four times a week. We pray for each other and text back-and-forth taking each other’s temperature. It’s a mix of all ages. Some of my closest relationships are with people the ages of my grandchildren. I am so blessed and so thankful.

Amen, Priscilla! After retiring I found a church that actually teaches the Bible, joined a study group and life is not the same! After almost 70 years, I have a peace and joy that truly is beyond all understanding. I am blessed beyond measure by people of every age and color. I pray others may find the same.

I’m very happy for you KJ. There’s nothing else like it.

I actually laughed out loud a few times! Good writing.

I’m interested to know how one even meets a billionaire let alone works for one. Not that I hold said billionaires in any type of esteem, high or otherwise. I’m assuming they are not good people because no one needs billions of dollars.

If you gave me one billion dollars I would be compelled to share it.

Gotta say, I really enjoyed reading this. True to life and thought provoking! Humans were never designed to live like this.

Design is everything. The design currently is isolating us and keeping us cynical about each other.

Oracle, Apple, Google, Amazon, X; what's in a name, eh?

This kind of writing redeems the time.

I'm going for a walk around the neighborhood!

Whats your take on the Google and Amazon names ?

Truly brilliant essay WW! Brought a few genuine tears. Cats ARE divine creatures you know, (especially orange ones) and I’m sure Mr. Kitty knew exactly what he was doing. I just lost my orange kittie a few months back, he passed away after 17 years of his love, and I miss him every single day. The aloneness has been palpable.

Yeah I’m surprised Peter Thiel hasn’t renamed himself Sauron. It truly could be the uniting factor for the fake divide. We are all Frodo now. Very clever weaving it into this heartfelt story.

I hope your mom and the lady neighbor’s tea dates continue delightfully and your dad finds some joy somehow.

There’s another Substacker I follow who’s in upstate NY. Maybe your parents could have common purpose? House of Green - Alexandra Fasulo[edit]. She has a new farm and has stumbled onto exposing the scam / destruction agenda of the solar farm industry along the way. She’s on fire. She may also have cats.

Edit: Here's a link to her latest on her solar investigation: https://houseofgreen.substack.com/p/follow-the-money-solar-farms-cannot

You realize you suckered us all in with pictures of kittens?!? What a wonderful story of connection. After you found the old lady who had taken the cat in and returned it to your mother, I kept wanting you to get a cat for the old lady. Your solution was so much better. Now there are two old lonely ladies who are no longer lonely and may even feel younger than they have in many years. New friendships bring new thoughts, new feelings, and new life.

Im here for the kittens too lol

Salient and on point. Technology in all it's greatness has also had net negatives in many areas of Life and you have hit the nail on the head, as it were. Thank you for sharing this valuable insight so that others may hopefully share in this understanding!

Strange and great story at the same time! Strange, not due to content, but strange because I read this particular story to my wife (who’s also a retired nurse practitioner) on my iPad. This 13” piece of hardware is my daily window on the world. I use my iPhone so little people that text me wonder sometimes if I’m dead. I have only two or three apps as I hate most of them for being too invasive.

Bless you for driving the 600 miles round trip and bringing these two women together! The old lady even gets to see Mr. Kitty periodically… absolutely fabulous!

I’m very sorry to hear about the closed off person your dad is (or has become). He and your mom could be such blessings to each other in their retirement years, but I guess unless he changes it’s not meant to be. Sometimes when people have a near death experience they come out of their shell and try to live a fuller life, knowing time isn’t on their side. I pray your dad will wake up soon… it’s not probable… but nothing with God is impossible either. Again, thanks for the great story!

The Palantirs of middle earth weren't created for evil but by the elves for communication over vast distances. Sauron employed the remaining ones of the third age for evil. Of course there are very real parallels with AI tech. I hear modern patriotic christians espousing the great advantages of AI (because Trump is involved) saying it ain't essentially evil; but they're utterly naive to think that it won't be used for evil purposes for we live in Satan's world (Luke 4:5-8) and the long prophesied Beast System is forming all-around.

You Crack me up! The orange cat is awesome. I love cats. If your mom or the other old lady would like a few more up there to keep them company, please let me know. I save cats that need saving. Would love for some of them to go to a great home where they would be treated like the royalty that they think they are. Peace out!
