I agree but I have a hard time believing that the Germans of that time were actually good people. They loved Hitler because of his hatred for the Jews, other ethnic groups, the communists, gay people, and so many others, not in spite of it. I agree but I have a hard time believing that the Germans of that time were actually good people. They loved Hitler because of his hatred for the Jews, other ethnic groups, the communists, gay people, and so many others, not in spite of it. So many fanatically supported him or looked the other way. I’ve read a lot and also watched many documentaries about the Holocaust. The more I’ve read the worse it gets, especially for the Jewish people who happened to be only 1% of Germany’s population. Many Nazis were only imprisoned for a short period of time. People cheered for them when they were let out.
My mother was German too, although her family had lived in Russia for 200 years in a German village. My father’s mother was German as was my step grandmother. I was trying to say that many Germans were swayed by Hitler AND his beliefs. Not all Germans, that is not what I meant. Part of it was the terrible economy and the shame of surrendering in WWI. Do I believe the white supremacists and neo-Nazis of today are good people- no I absolutely do not.
We are raising our four black grandchildren, our son’s beautiful kids. The white supremacy movement today is now accepted and promoted by Trump. It’s frightening, and shakes me to my core. My mother was a war bride and was “a German of that time.” I guarantee she was a wonderful, kind, and loving person. They were lied to just as we are. The corruption and power consolidation you're describing aren't happening despite our governing systems - they're happening because our governing systems were designed in the 1700s for a completely different world. And in the early 2000s, many of the constraints we had were systematically dismantled.
We're running 21st century complexity on 18th century architecture. No matter who you elect, no matter which party wins, they're all operating within a system that:
Has no institutional memory (policy whiplash every 4-8 years)
Creates perverse incentives (politicians spending 30+ hours/week fundraising)
Allows regulatory capture by design (revolving door between industry and oversight)
Literally shuts itself down when it can't agree on basic functions
That's not a people problem. That's an architecture problem.
Your anger is justified. But anger without a structural diagnosis just keeps us focused on the next villain while the system continues producing the same outcomes.

But here's the thing: humans designed this system. Which means humans can redesign it.
And we don't even need constitutional amendments to start. There are legislative fixes Congress could implement next session if enough citizens demanded it - things like ending congressional stock trading, requiring transparent budget accounting, creating institutional continuity mechanisms so policy doesn't whiplash every 4 years. The authoritarian toolkit that was assembled in the early 2000's? Congress could dismantle it with regular legislation if they had the political will.

We recently had hearings over zoning changes, overwhelming numbers protested the proposed changes, end result was the council passed them anyway, just like every other thing I have ever tried to fight. The “system” is not accountable to the people. What can really be done? Because town halls and school board meetings don’t matter either. They are just perfunctory events where you can speak and then be ignored. The system is corrupt and broken. You can’t use the system to change the system.

I agree with most of this article but the fact is Hitler had a 99% approval rating by 1938. He inherited hyperinflation and kicked out the jewish owned central bank and began printing currency interest free which by 1938 had the German economy as the envy of the world in just 5 years following hyperinflation. That’s the real reason for WW2 as it was purely economic to reinstate another central bank. You can’t have citizens the world over figuring out you can print your own currency interest free rather than borrowing it from a 3rd party. I pray for the salvation of my wife and family members who are not believers.
I look at the Israelites in Egypt. Things became incredibly bad before God's perfect timing led them out of Egypt. I believe we as Christians will see a similar pattern until God's perfect timing pulls the Church out before judgement. This is my hope. I have to hang onto this. I do not have the character to stand up and speak out. Lord knows I have tried at times, unconvincingly.
I am a sinner, and need God's grace. I wish I felt joy about this, I don't know if that part of my heart has been hardened because of life. I want to feel joy about this. All I have is my faith and for me right now, that has to be enough.
