When I was about 8, I had the meanest budgie alive. No matter how hard I tried to make friends, this little fucker would attack & draw blood at every opportunity. One day, I was at school & my dad came home for lunch. He decided he’d try to tame the little guy. His hand goes in the cage, Peter immediately bites & holds on…. My dad reflexively shook his hand, and … snap. That was the end of Peter. My parents panicked. They ran out to the pet store & got an identical blue budgie. Except this guy was an angel! Cuddly, loving.. he was Peter’s good twin. I was amazed that my dad “tamed” him. I didn’t find out about the switch until I was in my twenties. 😂 Great save, ww!!
It means your conscience is not seared, and that’s a good thing! I also replaced a parakeet but it really wasn’t MY fault. The other parakeet wouldn’t let him eat and I figured it out too late.
To me your story has so many layers that could be explored. Realities that clash but coexist at the same time. Wealth vs poverty. Being cared for while being neglected. A child's ideology clashing with "real" world consequences. Inner trauma suppressed to fit the "normal" reality...etc.
Even the hamster could be compared to humanities' experiences vs the controllers in so many ways.

Good morning Wolf. Estes rockets were cool back in the day. Having launched a few after hours of construction, only to have them turn into Apollo 13 and burn up, I threw in the towel. I never got to the point where I could launch MY sister's hamster. Incidentally, hamsters being small rodents, they have heart rates ~ 500 beats/minute. So when they get, shall we say "excited", it accelerates to 700-800 or more beats/min. That little heart is pounding away, demanding oxygen, and prone to MI (infarction). Lights out. So rest easy my friend, your sis's hamster did not suffer!

they were seriously so cool. i had a dozen of them over the ages of 8-12 before i started getting into dumb stuff like weed and girls.
