The COVID era, upon reflection, seems like it was an intense exercise in the malleability of the human mind when placed under duress. But it is more than that…it was the “emotional” investment that was set on fire and fanned….and reason or caution ignored.

What should be of grave concern, in the aftermath of the COVID era, is the seemingly growing ability (not to be admired) of vast swaths of the American public to ignore a reality right in their face because a screen or ideology says they should.

And then I wonder….in either scenario….who wins?

In reflecting this morning on the psychiatric crisis we face as a nation….it struck me ….
The COVID era, upon reflection, seems like it was an intense exercise in the malleability of the human mind when placed under duress. The seeds of division were sown…the right to hate your neighbor for not living your truth was validated. The weaponization of the human spirit was practiced and perfected.
But it is more than that…it was the “emotional” investment that was set on fire and fanned….and reason or caution ignored.
The battle cry…desperate times call for desperate measures…causing a stampede.
And when the dust settled, still reflection and introspection was not allowed….because people had staked their entire being on an emotional position and acted accordingly. It would be an affront to their sense of self to suggest that they acted recklessly, never mind with intentional disregard. The “emotional” investment of being the “good” citizen or the righteous one keeps them from ever examining what the source (never mind accuracy) of the advice was that they followed or why and how it came to be.
What should be of grave concern, in the aftermath of the COVID era, is the seemingly growing ability (not to be admired) of vast swaths of the American public to ignore a reality right in their face because a screen or ideology says they should.
For example, for years Democrats blasted any suggestion that Biden suffered from mental decline as “conspiracy theory” and unfounded partisan gamesmanship—-even as we saw on full display the decline.
Now, Republicans will defend and excuse Trump’s Epstein connections and erratic behavior in office even as the evidence piles up and should be undeniable.
It is more than hypocrisy. It is like a madness that has infected the electorate.
The narratives have taken on a life of their own and people are participating in them, rather than stepping back and deciding what the story should be, why, and the role they will play so that their reality can or may reflect their truths.
We’ve supplanted our search for values and truths with the powerful elite’s sad pathetic, often criminal, poorly written (and the players don’t even bother to try to deliver an Oscar performance) and severely lacking in purpose story.
In other words, we are accepting their versions of “truth” as the only versions available to us….which is just not the case.
But the structures and foundations that we have always thought aided us in writing our truths and creating our nation’s narratives/stories have been unduly corrupted and captured and ugliness (likely some has always been there) is being revealed in epic proportions and at an accelerating rate.
Eventually one or two things will happen….or at least that is my fear.
One, rage and division surges until it spills into a blind fury….burning down the vestiges of what has been. Controlled burn? Or complete demolition? Like the riot that follows the court verdict or a civil war that decimates…brother against brother.
The other real possibility….over time, the public becomes immune to the horror. It continues to happen. No accountability. Crimes still committed….but the average person disconnects, unable to expend energy they no longer have . They plod on the treadmill and are resigned to what the screens say and accepting of a lack of sovereignty that is slowly introducing itself into their lives.
And then I wonder….in either scenario….who wins?
And I think about how the media is quiet about the Epstein files….are TPTB watching, collecting data from social media platforms, taking our pulse so to speak?
And who writes the next chapter? The conspiracy isn’t an already made plan being executed….it’s a weapon being wielded. We are being herded. Poked, prodded, channeled….and most of us hold a device in our hands that give TPTB that immense power. They are deciding what our reality will be instead of us deciding.
Laura, I think the public is already immune. Why? Because there's zero accountability. No arrests. No prosecutions. No prison. Noting ever changes. It's exhausting and distressing.

I deposed a Catholic priest in prison (shortly before he was to be released after serving time for the sexual abuse of a minor) who continued to insist that the basis for his relationship with the minor was that they were “in love”. I recall the research around pedophile often suggested that a pedophile cannot be rehabilitated. I tend to think that is true. But of course, for a bit, society toyed with the idea that that meant it should not be punished or treated as a crime since the individual cannot control his/her impulses—-little regard for the damage done to the child or victim—-but again, sexual crimes are IMO fundamentally about power and abuse of power.
In my state, Maine, there was a prominent Democrat official (formally prominent in DC and also ran for Governor here) who in recent years was arrested for child pornography. He received a rather light sentence given the breadth and volume of his transgressions. Another kicker….his wife was a practicing psychiatrist for adolescents and children. Can you imagine?
Anyhow, reading his history/profile (education, background, political ties, prominence in partisan affairs, etc.) I know it gave me pause….because the whole affair followed rumors of Pizzagate….you know, the old adage….where there’s smoke there is fire.
