Somewhat off-topic, but... some weird paintings and sculptures in churches have occurred simply because some craftsman wasn't paid in time, or was otherwise mistreated.
A lot more often though, these stories are just made up to explain something unusual. In our parts, we have a persistent urban legend that the roof decorations on a certain church are in fact body parts Lily doesn't want to see. From a certain angle, they may look like that, and they're rather high up, so it's hard to be certain. The legend however has been debunked multiple times, but it still refuses to die.
